Matilda Devine, criminal record number 659LB, 27 May 1925. State Reformatory for Women, Long Bay, NSW. Matilda “Tilly” Devine used a razor to slash a man's face in a barber's shop and was sentenced to two years gaol. She was Sydney's best-known brothel madam and her public quarrels with sly-grog queen Kate Leigh provided the media with an abundance of material. Aged 25. These pictures are part of a collection of mug shot images of women who did time in the State Reformatory for Women set up in Sydney’s Long Bay jail over the period 1915-30. I did a post on my blog about the background to these shots which people might be interested in, here:http://www.pulpcurry.com/2011/05/the-two-faces-of-the-femme-fatale/
