RETREAT
TO GOODISVILLE 2012
Tour by Lou Boxer and Duane Swierczynski
Goodis House in East Oak Lane, where he wrote most of his novels.
North 11th Street,
Philadelphia (N40° 2.9341', W075° 8.2352' )
No trip would be complete if we did not visit the last residence of David Goodis in Philadelphia. At this house many of his greatest PBO were written and delivered to the publishers in still of the night. Dropped off at the doorstep like an unwanted child, Goodis's works would come to represent some of the best writing in the post world war II era.
What a difference a year makes!

Goodis's bedroom is the only bedroom facing the back of the house. Looking north, it is the first doorway on the right. Robert Polito goes in to inspect the former bedroom of David Goodis. Outside it is the window in the back with the green awning.

Temple
University Alumni Bulletin, 1963 – One of the last pictures of David Goodis
from behind, dark against a light-shot window, in the foreground, on the bed
which he is seated is a book that is out of proportion given the angle of the
photographer. Note this is the same window that Polito is looking out of.

It is a classic house in style for suburbia. The ideal location is really perched at top of the hill. The photography is amazing.
