The North American Branch of the International Association of Crime Writers is pleased to announce that THE NEAREST EXIT NAMED WINNER OF NORTH AMERICAN HAMMETT PRIZE 2010.
The North American Branch of the International Association of Crime Writers is pleased to announce that The Nearest Exit, by Olen Steinhauer (St. Martin’s/Minotaur), has been named the winner of the organization's annual HAMMETT PRIZE for a work of literary excellence in the field of crime writing.
The winning title was chosen by a group of three distinguished outside judges: David Savran (Distinguished Professor of Theatre, CUNY Graduate Center), author of Highbrow/Lowdown: Theater, Jazz, and the Making of the New Middle Class; Bonnie Scherr, former manager of Baltimore’s Ivy Book Shop; and Robin Whitten, Editor of AudioFile. The judges selected from among four finalists nominated from the hundreds of crime books published in 2010. These four titles were selected by the organization's nominations committee headed by Jillian Abbott.
Other books nominated for the 2010 HAMMETT PRIZE were Get Capone: The Secret Plot That Captured America's Most Wanted Gangster, by Jonathan Eig (Simon & Schuster); Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter: A Novel, by Tom Franklin (William Morrow); and Iron River, by T. Jefferson Parker (Dutton).
Mr. Steinhauer was awarded a bronze trophy, designed by West Coast sculptor, Peter Boiger. The award ceremony took place in Atlantic City, on September 20, during the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association’s (NAIBA) Fall Conference.
