Jersey City Plumbing Nightmare…

More of a personal blog post than anything else, I just wanted to take a moment to to recount a little story that began as a nightmare but ended up working itself out.  It all started one dark night when I was finishing a binge of some of my favorite noir.  I think it was heavy on the Bogart for sure, and perhaps a little bit of Cognac to boot…

Well anyway, the story goes a little something like this:

I’m in my favorite armchair relaxed and on my 3rd snifter, really taking in the relaxation that comes after a long day at work and a calm night at home.  It also really helped that the night in question was a Friday night, and no responsibilities or commitments were to bother me the next morning.  Hence, I was more than happy to get a little more than tipsy when finishing up my Bogart binge.

Little did I know that the cruel hand of fate would have different plans for my night and the next morning.

After taking a strong sip of the that smooth brown fire, I started to hear a strange sound.  Sort of like a “wssh wshhh” type sound, maybe something like what you hear when you put your ear to the end of the of a sea shell.  While I was curious, it took me a couple of minutes to dislodge myself from my comfort to investigate what was going on…

Following the sound upstairs I started walking down the hallway, turning to my left when all of a sudden I was walking through drenched wet carpet.  The water was oversaturating the carpet and piling up about an inch high.

Shit! I exclaimed both outloud and internally.  What the hell is going on…

I’m not a home improvement type of guy, I get no pleasure from getting my hands dirty, so I’m seriously at a loss here.  However, I do have the sense to call on a professional in times of need.  Finding a plumber serving Jersey City shouldn’t be that difficult, even at the late hour.  Plumbers make their living on emergencies? No?

Well, in my initial panic I was still able to navigate my smartphone and find a number of a plumber who was able to calm me down.  He even walked me through the process of finding a shutoff valve in the upstairs bathroom, where the leak had sprung.

I was later informed that the pipe had corroded entirely, leaking somewhat slowly but enough to soak the bathroom and upstairs hall.  Thankfully it looks like no permanent damage was done to the flooring or wood (this could have been a much bigger issue than it was, perhaps my Bogart Binge paid off, as I was awake much later than I would have been normally).
