3. Place: Ken Bruen: Jack Taylor is dispensable
(The guards)
German by Harry Rowohlt
(Atrium)

As a police officer Jack Taylor is lurking with a thermos full of brandy with a splash of coffee armed movement sinners. Vorüberrauscht As a black Mercedes on him, he stops the car. The rear window slides down. On the bench sits a senior government official of the Ministry of Finance. And Jack strikes.
Then Taylor is dispensable. And continues as a private investigator. He moves into its new office in Grogan's, the only pub in Galway, where he had never Hausverbot. Actually a serious place for serious drinking. But soon Jack has his first case on the cheek.

What Bruen sets before us is grim, angry and cynical, an embittered look of a frustration, desperation and alcohol soaked person who has lost confidence in most of mankind. A vestige of morality holds Jack Taylor - a vestige of morality, which he in Ireland shortly after the turn of the century can no longer recognize. But he remains on the search. Low on the ground. Glasses of whiskey and pints.
